In this book, the author attempts what he,
himself, calls a serious synthesis of previous works on the history of the
Fuuta Jaloo State. Indeed, Tauxier assesses his sources critically and somewhat
thoroughly. In the process, he offers invaluable data and information on
the rise and fall of the Fuuta Jaloo theocracy. Yet, the book's perspective
and style reflect the views of a French colonial administrator-historian,
confident in France's lasting control over its African empire and its inhabitants.
Readers should therefore approach the material herein with a mindset even
more critical than Tauxier's treatment of his predecessors. Caveat!
